In a world that never seems to stop talking, perhaps the most radical thing we can do is learn to listen to ourselves.
For media personality and creative force Sidwell Ngwenya that meant stepping away from the familiar and embarking on a solo journey across South Africa. The result is #SouthernExploration, a multidisciplinary storytelling project by SID Records that brings together travel, music, film and personal reflection in an intimate exploration of what it means to find yourself again.
Anchored by a digital docu-reality series, the project moves beyond postcard perfect landscapes and scenic road trips. It invites us to pause, breathe and reconnect with the person beneath the noise away from the expectations and relentless demands of everyday life.
At its heart, Southern Exploration is about conscious self discovery, intentional reflection and the courage to live in alignment with who you are. Through encounters with local communities, unfamiliar landscapes and different ways of living, Sidwell uses the road as a space for perspective asking questions often lost in the rush of modern life.
For Sidwell, the experience was as personal as it was creative. “Southern Exploration for me, is a moment of peace to be myself again away from the noise. This was an opportunity for me to reflect on my career in front of and behind the screen,” he shares.
Away from friends, family and the familiarity of home. The journey offered him something increasingly rare: the freedom to sit with himself, reflect on his experiences and confront questions that do not always come with immediate answers.
Despite having travelled extensively throughout South Africa and covered approximately 70 per cent of the country, Sidwell still found wonder in places that offered fresh perspectives. Among them were Graaff-Reinet, home to the dramatic Valley of Desolation and Oudtshoorn where the extraordinary Cango Caves reveal a natural world that feels almost otherworldly.
These destinations became more than stops along a route. They formed part of a larger story about perspective, presence and the beauty of experiencing the world beyond the familiar.
For a creative who has spent years shaping stories both in front of and behind the camera, Southern Exploration also presented an opportunity to bring his worlds together more personally. The docu-reality series captures the stillness, discoveries and reflections of travelling alone while an accompanying EP translates the spirit of the journey into sound.
The two creative expressions approach the experience from different perspectives. While the series creates space for solitude and introspection, the music embraces collaboration bringing together artists Sidwell has previously worked with in production alongside an exciting new act.
The result promises a meeting of sounds, influences and perspectives that reflects the project’s wider philosophy: self-discovery may begin alone but creativity continues to thrive through connection.
Launching in the week commencing 12 October 2026, the Southern Exploration docu-reality series will unfold through weekly digital episodes on Sidwell’s Instagram page (@iammrcroc) and the official #SidwellsPOV YouTube channel.
With music, film and self-reflection at its core. The project reminds us that sometimes the most meaningful journey is not about how far we travel but how deeply we come to know ourselves along the way.
