Portia Mngomezulu & Thebe Ikalafeng

Brand Africa announced South African skin care brand, ‘Portia M’ as the most admired and highest ranking women-owned brand in South Africa.  The award is based on the South African results of the 12th annual Brand Africa 100:  Africa’s Best Brands 2022 survey and rankings of the ‘most admired brands in Africa.’

Portia M, the affordable skin care brand and business was founded in 2011 by Phalaborwa, Limpopo born Portia Mngomezulu, a qualified systems engineer, who got the inspiration for her business in 2010 after she had a child and discovered the remarkable benefits of Marula oil which her mother-in-law recommended for her post-natal stretch marks.  The black-owned award-winning skin care brand that caters, ‘for every skin under the African sun’ as she puts it, is now available in 14 countries across Africa, employs over 150 staff and has created over 2,000 related jobs in merchandising the products across leading supermarkets and pharmacies.

On receiving the award, the founder, Mrs Mgomezulu said: “This is such a humbling honour. Building an admired African brand that uses African ingredients has been a life changing and fulfilling experience. This award affirms our commitment and belief that African women are equal to the task of building great brands and businesses.”

Today’s Brand Africa | Africa’s Best Brands recognition of the ‘most admired women brands’ is officially the kick-off of an annual initiative to recognize women-owned brands.  It will be held every year across Africa on International Women’s Day which is 8 March globally and 9 August in South Africa.  The initiative will be expanded beyond the Africa-wide survey to an adjudicated entries based process and expanded categories.

Now in its 12th year, every year on or around Africa Day, 25 May, Brand Africa releases the global results of the survey on the most admired brands in Africa based on a survey across 29 countries that represent as much as 85% of the continent’s GDP and population.  The 2022 survey was conducted between March and April 2022 and yielded over 80,000 brand mentions and over 3,500 unique brands.
