South Africa has a brand new sport: the African Biathlon. Unveiled today by the Nedbank Running Club, South Africa’s largest running movement, this initiative is designed to get South Africans moving by injecting excitement and culture into running.

Traditionally, Biathlon is an Olympic sport combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting—activities ill-suited to our sunny climate. Enter the African Biathlon, a sport reimagined to reflect the spirit of Mzansi.

The African Biathlon will consist of two legs. The first is a 5km run, accessible to runners of all levels. The second is a post-run activity— the “carrot” to inspire more people to hit the road. These post-run activities can range from enjoying a coffee with friends, exploring local art, wine-tasting, or even partying. Crucially, the choice is entirely up to participants, ensuring every African Biathlon reflects the diverse passions of its runners.

Research indicates that 77% of local runners wish they had running communities in their areas. The African Biathlon addresses this need by combining fitness with social connection through shared passions.

“We’ve set out to create a new kind of running movement,” said Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and Nedbank Running Club member. “The African Biathlon isn’t just about fitness—it’s a cultural celebration. It’s about running, connecting, and having fun together.”

The African Biathlon officially kicks off in Johannesburg from February to March 2025 in collaboration with leading community running crews like Benchwarmers Running Club, Social Running Club, and Vault Running Club, ensuring a community driven approach.

Each event will pair a 5km run with engaging post-run experiences in relaxed and welcoming environments.

The running community will also play a central role in defining the final format of the African Biathlon. Participants will help shape the sport by voting for their favorite post-run activities, making this movement a true reflection of South Africa’s creativity, diversity, and vibrant culture.

“Nedbank is committed to helping our customers save time while banking, allowing them to spend their time on things that matter most, with the people that matter most.” says Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “The African Biathlon is more than a fitness initiative; it’s a celebration of community and culture. For those starting the year with fitness goals, this is a fresh and exciting way to stay motivated while having fun.”
