
The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Hon. Solly Malatsi has held a series of high-level engagements aimed at accelerating digital inclusion and strengthening South Africa’s digital transformation agenda.
In one engagement, the Minister met with Net Nine Nine Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Albert Oosthuysen and the company’s executive team to discuss the expansion of affordable fibre connectivity in low-LSM communities. The discussions focused on advancing access to digital infrastructure while creating meaningful socio-economic impact.
Net Nine Nine outlined its community-driven model which prioritises local job creation, the empowerment of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), school connectivity, support for small businesses and investment in impactful corporate social investment initiatives. With more than 480,000 homes passed across eight provinces and over 1,000 jobs created through its network, the company highlighted the role of connectivity as a catalyst for education, economic growth and social development.

In a separate engagement, Minister Malatsi met with the Ambassador of Sweden to South Africa, H.E. Anna Karin Eneström and Ericsson’s Senior Vice President for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mr Patrick Johansson. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration to support South Africa’s digital transformation priorities.
Key areas of discussion included equity equivalent requirements for multinational ICT companies, the acceleration of 5G rollout, digital skills development for youth and underserved communities and aligning global technology investments with South Africa’s broader socio-economic development objectives.
Through continued partnerships with both local and international stakeholders, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies remains committed to advancing inclusive connectivity, skills development and innovation ensuring that the benefits of the digital economy reach all South Africans.
