President Cyril Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to multilateralism, peace, and justice during his address at an Extraordinary BRICS Leaders’ Meeting, held virtually to address escalating global tensions and humanitarian concerns.

Speaking alongside fellow BRICS leaders, President Ramaphosa stressed the urgent need for coordinated international responses to ongoing conflicts, particularly the crisis in the Middle East. He called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, the establishment of humanitarian corridors, and accountability for violations of international law.

“South Africa remains deeply concerned by the immense human suffering we are witnessing,” said Ramaphosa. “We urge all parties to respect international law and protect civilians, particularly women and children, who bear the brunt of these conflicts.”

In his address, President Ramaphosa supported the deployment of a United Nations Rapid Deployment Force to monitor ceasefires and ensure the protection of civilians in war-affected zones. He also underscored the need to reform global governance structures, including the UN Security Council, to make them more representative and responsive to the voices of developing nations.

The Extraordinary Summit comes amid growing calls within the Global South for a stronger, unified front in addressing global inequities and advocating for peace and sustainable development.

Ramaphosa reaffirmed BRICS role as a platform for cooperation and solidarity, noting that the bloc’s collective voice is vital in shaping a fairer international order.

“This is not the time for division, unilateralism, or indifference. This is the time for unity, compassion, and decisive multilateral action,” he emphasized.

The meeting concluded with a joint declaration by BRICS leaders, echoing calls for an immediate halt to hostilities and greater support for humanitarian efforts in conflict affected regions.

President Ramaphosa’s participation reinforced South Africa’s position as a leading voice for peace, justice, and inclusive global governance within the BRICS alliance.
