Founder – Akua Ngwenya

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful place in Africa called Nubia with dark red to brown to black skin people. It had rich deposits of gold and was a gateway for all luxury products to and from other parts of Africa. Nubia had women rulers and represented an elite culturally diverse society. The name Nubian Roc was born when founder Akua Ngwenya was looking for a name that represented what the brand represent “Going Black” “Black Roc” then “Nubian Roc”. The name was a second chance for Akua to move to her higher purpose.

She became acutely aware of the ingredients only after having a child and was alarmed at all the ‘nasties’ that go into commercial body products. She then decided to go back to the “good old days” in Ghana where African Black Soap, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter was used. She realised very quickly that the “problem” was bigger and wanted to be part of the solution. In an effort to finding ways of making these products accessible in South Africa, she decided to partner with a shea butter supplier in Ghana which has allowed her products to be available to world wide.

We had a few question to ask Akua and this is what she had to say.
